Children Born of Dreams (1)

Pregnancy was the growing sensual arousal to the birth orgasm! Why weren't sisters sharing with one another word of the joys and fulfillment in reproductive sexuality which were uniquely female?

--Jeanine Parvati Baker

Pregnancy is a time of heightened sensitivity because a woman stands at the door between the physical and spiritual world. Included here are pregnancy dreams of women interviewed by Elizabeth Carman.

People throughout the ages respected a dream as a genuine spiritual experience. The Jewish Kabbalah states:

Everything that happens in the world is first of all intimated by a dream or a herald, for everything that happens in the world is first of all announced in the firmament, and from there is spreads out into the world and is transmitted by a herald.

Ancient Greeks, for instance, realized that our inward eye is blind while we are awake and preoccupied with bodily matters and physical perceptions. However we experience spirit sight with our inward eye when our five senses become shut in sleep.

The Greek theory that the activity of the soul and bodily activity vary inversely found an advocate in Sir Thomas Browne who wrote, "The slumber of the body seems to be but the waking of the soul."

Here we highlight pregnancy dreams of modern mothers.

Linda

My deceased grandmother came to me in a vivid dream. She told me, "You are pregnant and will give birth to a daughter." I said, "I don't believe you." She said, "Well, touch me and you will see that I am real." I touched her and said, "Wow, this really is real." Then I woke up and told my husband. He knew it was true.

I had the dream right after I conceived. When I had the dream, I did not know I was already pregnant. I gave birth to a girl.

Sarah

My baby came to me a lot in my dreams. I knew that he was a boy. I would just be with him. It was beautiful.

Susana

In my first pregnancy, I knew I was going to have a boy from the moment of conception. I intuitively felt the sex of the child. Later on, I had a dream of a little boy.

I also had pregnancy dreams of my two other children: "Oh yes, it is a little boy or a little girl." I always knew what sex they were going to be.

In one pregnancy dream, my daughter wore a green sleeping outfit. My mother did not know anything about my dream, but sure enough, Mom bought her this green outfit a few months after my daughter's birth.

Deyon

When I was four and one half months pregnant, I had an unforgettable dream. My dream was colored in beautiful pink and blue pastel hues. I was running down a beautiful, illuminated, bluish-gray walkway or tunnel. I was dressed in a jumpsuit, the same one that I wore almost the entire time I was pregnant.

The walkway crossed a brook that came babbling over some stepping stones. I approached the stepping stones in the middle of the brook and saw a baby in a basket. The water was bubbling all around me. I sat down on the stones, picked up the baby and started nursing him. I knew he was my baby. Then, everything turned the prettiest shade of pastel blue I had ever seen. I thought, "Oh, I am going to have a boy."

My husband had a dream on the same evening. We woke up the next morning and exchanged dreams. He dreamed that a baby entered my womb that night. As she entered my womb, she told him her name and that she was going to be a girl. When he woke up, he did not remember her name, but he insisted that the baby was a girl and so we did not pick out a boy's name.

About a month or two later, my doctor took the baby's heartbeat and said, "The baby has a low heartbeat -- 120. It probably will be a boy, but it is difficult to tell because it is a borderline heartbeat."

After our daughter was born, I thought, "Well, my husband is right again."

Rosie

My son first appeared in a pregnancy dream or a meditation vision. I had a clear picture of my son: a blonde-haired little boy around five or six years old. He was tall, thin and serious. Later after he was born and became a toddler, I remember initially being a little disappointed because Martin did not physically appear as I had expected. He was a happy, little fellow, grinning a lot, chubby in the face, checks and neck were chubby. He was absolutely not like this little person in my vision.

With time, however, he lost his baby fat around five years old and grew into that very child. Now he is very lean and there is nothing extra on him. He is serious and tall.
