A variety of souls wait in the wings for birth. Advanced souls seek spiritual benefits and desire to further mankind's evolution as leaders, geniuses, or humanitarians. Lesser evolved, on the other hand, are interested in enjoying the outwardly stimulating pleasures of this world.
Couples can give birth to children belonging to a higher or lower stage of development. A couple who desires an exceptional child must raise their consciousness, quality of thoughts and feelings, attitude, and way of life, in order to attract an advanced soul. Parents who are unable to attract an advanced soul will bring in a young soul who turns out to be a troublesome offspring. Such children waste time, energy, money, and their bodies. They are typically lured by superficial values and hinder their spiritual growth by using alcohol, drugs, tobacco.
Advanced souls await the opportunity of birth to pure parents. That is why some parents make efforts to draw the right soul for their family during the period prior to conception. Some spend three months; others may spend a year. Couples who are at their best - spiritually, mentally, and physically - increase the possibility of conceiving exceptional children.
India -- The Bhagavad Gita reminds us that great souls are drawn to right thought, speech, and action, as well as the love, harmony, and joy reflected in a couple's relationship. Therefore, it is in the couple's best interests to prepare for pregnancy: cleanse themselves of toxins, eliminate stress build-up, increase balance of body, mind, and spirit through meditation, rest, a healthy diet, discontinue tobacco, drugs, alcohol, and so forth.
Pythagoras -- This Greek philosopher established an institute for women to learn about perfect marriage, the blending of two souls at the center of life and truth. The elder priestesses or a high priest advised women favorable times to conceive a healthy child, as well as physical and moral hygiene during pregnancy. Women learned how to accomplish this sacred work in accordance with divine law.
"Sacred and divine is the task of the mother who is to create for it [the incoming soul from heaven] a fresh dwelling, to mitigate the harshness of its prison and render the trial easier to bear." (Schure, Pythagoras and the Delphic Mysteries)
Greek Mystery Schools (500 BC) -- Women of antiquity received special feminine preparation and initiation in order to fulfill their duties as wives and mothers. The ancient Greek mystery schools taught women how to choose the right person to marry, and how to create healthy, strong, beautiful, loving, magnetic, intelligent children. These women initiates produced great philosophers, poets, heroes, dancers, artists, architects and sculptors. We still admire their sublime deeds, sculptures and songs. Their children developed beautiful bodies as seen in carvings of the time of Pericles, such as Venus.
Christiane Northrup M. D -- Meditate and pray with your husband or partner "for guidance around the prospect of having a child. . . . do this even if you're considering donor insemination! . . . . see your body as a channel for a new spirit and to surrender yourself to the experience - to be open to all that it has to teach you." (Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom)
Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov -- And now, who do you say should be educated? I will tell you: the parents, not their children. How did humans sink so low as to leave this all important event -- the conception of a child -- to chance? It is something for which they should call on Heaven, asking the angels to come and help them to attract a powerful, luminous being into their family. (Education Begins before Birth)
The world will enter a "Golden Age" once it regains understanding of the creative function of the sexual act. Light will come to the world like "the light that never shone on sea and land. . . . Then the world will have a race of Buddhas and Christs, for the world will have discovered that individuals have it in their own power to procreate Buddha-like children. . . ." (Joyce McDavid, "The Emergence of Life," in Schultz's theosophical guide to parenthood, p, 53. quoting Master K.H.)
These gifted children will be healthy, strong, beautiful, loving, intelligent, and spiritually-oriented. They will desire to learn, serve, explore, care, and achieve. They will be receptive to greater possibilities and they will help people live in better ways.
Otoman Zar-Adusht-Hanish -- Accordin to Mazdaznam philosophy, six weeks of preparation is needed to create favorable conditions for conception. Besides following a special diet and sexual abstinence, the aspiring mother concentrates her thoughts upon the sex of the child desired. By virtue of thought transference, she prepares ripening ovum to attract the desired germ, either a male or female.
The mother's thoughts are equally important during sexual intercourse. If couple desires a son, the wife gazes upon her husband's eyes and face when they reach sexual climax and orgasm is about to take place. She thus imparts to child expressions she considers to be manly and endows child with characteristics she holds ideal. If couple prefers a daughter, wife views a picture of a perfect woman or statue of a woman perfect in symmetry and facial expression at moment orgasm begins.
"The sperm of the male . . . when deposited follows the thought waves of the controlling mind of woman. . . . Each individual spermatozoon contains or represents the principal features of expression peculiar to its individual kind and requires for its selection the mind of mother, to which thought the germ will respond in the expression most desired and desirable to the premeditated thought." (Inner Studies)
Tibet -- Couples prepare physically, emotionally, mentally, and spirituality before they invite a child into the womb and family. Couples reassess their life plans and change physical habits to cleanse bodies of toxins and nourish themselves with healthy food. (The Tibetan Art of Parenting)
Mayans, Incas, and Aztecs -- these ancient cultures established training schools to prepare women to birth advanced children.
Hinduism -- sacred rituals are performed to prepare the earthly way for incoming soul.
Ancient Essenes -- reverent rituals were performed in preparation for incoming soul.
Ancient China -- the wife was encouraged to purify her heart, put aside worldy sorrows, to meditate and fast. Then, on the third day after menstruation has ended, love-making takes place after midnight and before early morning. There should be considerable foreplay. The husband must adjust his innermost feelings to his wife and blend his enjoyment with hers.
Lawrence Vijay Girard -- Daily meditation raises the parents' energy level and power of attraction. "The time spent each day in communion with the love and joy of Spirit is the most transforming of all human activities. It will attract souls want to know the joy of God communion." (Doorway to a New Lifetimes, Childbirth from a Spiritual View)
Torkom Saraydarian -- Meditation, contemplation, and visualization of great ideas draw higher souls. Months before conception, the couple choose an inspiring idea to meditate upon, an idea that their souls crave, such as political, education, philosophical, scientific, artistic, religious, and economic. They amplify effect of the idea in their minds through reading, hearing and talking about it. They involve their souls and minds with the idea. Their aura and life expressions gradually become charged with the idea, which becomes a powerful magnetic field. Advanced souls await to see such a formation to come back into incarnation.
Torkom Saraydarian -- Physical attraction between a man and woman, by itself, "cannot create an electrical call into higher spheres of frequencies where the advanced souls wait for incarnation." A couple who experiences emotional fusion increase their chances to extend a call into higher spheres. "Mental at-one-ment further extends the electrical line into higher spheres. But only an idea charged with intuitional Fire can penetrate into higher spheres and build a bridge of light for incoming soul." (Woman, Torch of the Future)
Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov -- The best preparation is to elevate thoughts, feelings, attitude, and way of life so as to attract exceptional beings into your family. (Education Begins before Birth)
Zen Buddhism -- Couples must pray, "Lord, how best can we help our future child cleanse his karma and in what way can that child help us cleanse our karma?" Only after they have meditated "soberly and with great reverence" are couples ready to conceive a child. (Jiyu-Kennett, Roshi and MacPhillamy, Daizui, Rev., The Book of Life)
Lawrence Vijay Girard -- Ask God for attunement in this process and pray that the Divine will be done. "Broadcast your soul call" to the world where souls wait for conception. "Mentally send words of invitation, or simply radiate your love." (Doorway to a New Lifetimes, Childbirth from a Spiritual View)
Murshida Vera Justin Corda -- Pray in the following way, "O angels of love, . . . guide the soul who has chosen my womb to build the temple of God that it will occupy on earth. O blessed angels, created by the breath of God, send a soul to me/us who embodies the most blessed of thy Divine Attributes, _ _ _ _ _ (name the qualities you desire). Through the light of Lailah, angel of conception, grant my heart's desire and make me a worthy guardian to this incoming soul. Amen." (Cradle of Heaven)
Torkom Saraydarian explains why couples conceive and birth children belonging to a higher or lower stage of development.
"Intercourse must be performed between highly-advanced people with due preparation and upliftment, so that in the act of intercourse they are able to build a bridge into higher planes and allow only higher souls to walk down the bridge to the womb. Meditation, prayer, purity of life, righteousness, creativity, joy, and a spirit of gratitude all help them to build this bridge during intercourse." Lower souls "cannot approach a bridge or a magnetic field which is built by the substance of prayers, aspirations, beauty, goodness, justice, joy and freedom. such contaminated souls can only be attracted to those who present them an easy access with their low sphere of vibration."
Most couples have sexual intercourse on physical/etheric and astral energy levels. Children created with these energies are "emotionally focused, and either criminal or goody-goody, depending on the quality of the parents' emotional exchange." They do not rise to greatness.
Many children are born before they are ready. "They were hovering in the etheric plane. They saw a funnel created from a couple having intercourse in an etheric-level fusion, and they came through it. But they were not ready to be born. They needed time to go to higher planes, to learn lessons, and to assimilate what they learned in their past life. When souls descend prematurely from the etheric plane, they are not very together people and they cause many problems in life."
Couples attract souls of a higher nature if intercourse is done on physical/etheric, emotional, as well as the mental levels. Their children will be "mentally focused, and either separative and dogmatic or great humanitarian thinkers and disciples, depending on the quality of the parents' mental exchange."
The couple attracts children of an even higher nature if sex occurs on physical/etheric, emotional, mental, as well as the intuitional levels. These children will be "Initiates, great world servers."
Couples having sex on the physical/etheric, emotional, mental, intuitional, as well as atmic levels will attract children from the Atmic Plane. "They will become Masters." During sexual intercourse, these couples are fused spiritually. The lower doors are closed; only the higher spiritual levels are opened.
When a couple are in tune with each other during love-making - like two musical instruments - they attract an advanced soul. Saraydarian explains: sexual intercourse is a process of fusion between two bodies and two auras. The woman receives etheric energy and certain secretions from the man. She multiplies them in her organ and psychic system and returns them to the man as joy and vitality. This emotional energy of love uplifts and heals the man, and he starts his orgasm. His aura and etheric centers fuse with the woman's aura and etheric centers and create a colorful electro-magnetic funnel "for the reception of the thread of life from the one who is ready to incarnate." Their feelings of love, respect, and admiration create a sphere of attraction which appeals only to an advanced soul. The funnel extends from their sex organs, etheric bodies, astral bodies, and mental bodies. (On the other hand, feelings of disunity, rejection, or conflict create a gray magnetic sphere which attracts a less-evolved soul.)
"Wherever your funnel reaches from that very sphere the incarnating soul will be Ôfished.' The higher you are, the more advanced will be your baby." Academic accomplishments, social status, and knowledge do not create the highest funnels. "It is your beingness at the time of intercourse" that selects the baby. Beingness is "the sum total of the love you have for beauty, goodness, justice, joy and freedom."
If a couple are at different levels, and the woman conceives a child, they will attract a child from "a level between the two, and very often from the level of the parent lowest in beingness."
Couples express harmlessness in their personalities, thoughts, emotions, and actions. That means they exercise right thought, clear thinking, and proper speech. They do not hinder the evolution of others through wrong words. Their emotional reactions manifest as pure love. They have right conduct, discipline, and creative UPLIFTING WILL. Advanced souls reject parents who are involved in any harmful act. They do not want to be burdened by the karma of their harmful actions.
Harmlessness creates a powerful magnetic aura and enriches the couple's aura with splendid colors and hues. During sexual intercourse, such a couple appears as a blooming flower or garden. Advanced souls are drawn to great beauty.
If many advanced people consciously invite advanced souls into incarnation, they can cause great improvements in earthly life.
The act of procreation should be accomplished with full participation of mind, soul, and spirit -- a special moment of peace, lucidity, and close harmony. In this way, the child will have "bonds with a world superior to our own." (Education Begins before Birth)
Zen Buddhism teaches that the ideas and thoughts hovering in the couple's minds during intercourse mold the character of the child conceived.
The mental attitude of the parents at conception has an equally significant influence. It is their duty to meditate with their unborn child from the moment prior to conception. Furthermore, couples must respect their bodies as the Lord's temple. They must offer themselves, the unborn child, and the sex act to the Lord. True conception then occurs and "the seed of life descends in purity."
"Intercourse is a holy act; orgasm a sacred unity." The couple must be "utterly respectful and gentle in the sense of the marriage vow, 'with my body I thee worship.'"
A child born of such a union has an excellent chance to cleanse all karmic jangles [former judgments] in his lifetime. He is "wanted and understood" from the moment that he stood before the Lord and is asked, "Will you accept your new parents?"
Without proper understanding of the purpose and sacredness of the sex act, people turn sex "into a pleasant game to alleviate the boredom that has resulted from their living externally from their centre rather than internally." They feel guilt and embarrassment about sex. They moralize sex and hide it behind closed doors as a taboo or flaunt sex in an "attempt to pretend that the guilt does not exist."
"When sexuality is used to create more karma of attachment and suffering, it becomes both physically and mentally harmful. . . . This is sexual indulgence . . . . The sexual act has, as its highest purpose, the union of two people before the Lord and with the Lord in order that the karma of sentient beings may be cleansed. To turn it into an act which creates further karma and suffering is the true meaning of perversion."
Children born out of their parents' lust acquire "a karmic jangle that rightfully belongs to their parents." When "that seed is snatched in lust," the child's chances of cleansing karmic jangles are diminished.
"There is no such thing as a child born in sin; there are children conceived in lust as a result of their parents trying to rob the Lord of His Seed. Such parents rob themselves of their unity with the Lord and, if they persist in the misuse of sex, put off that unity for countless ages. The sex act is the act of the Lord when it is undertaken to free an unborn being from his karmic jangles." (Jiyu-Kennett, Roshi and Mac Phillamy, Daizui, The Book of Life)
Parents' thoughts are the shaper and molder of events at conception. A diversity of cultures acknowledge this power.
India --The impact of the mother's thought creates a condition in the sperm and ovum which produces a fetus resembling those thoughts. Excessive intake of food, fasting, or thirst prior to love-making have an inhibiting influence.
Muria (India) -- The mother's mind is so powerful that she can control whether conception occurs. "A girl can only become pregnant when she binds herself to a man in her mind, and remains physically true to him." Until a girl marries, she rarely conceives, even though there is full sexual freedom. But once she commits herself to a man, then she soon becomes pregnant." Other tribal people use this birth control method with up to 96% reliability and see the mental attitude toward conception as an integral part of the process of conception. (Sexual Secrets)
Tibet -- The environment at conception is important. Ideally a couple meditates on love, compassion, or gentleness and avoids anger, attachment, jealousy, or fantasies. At the time of conception, there is a great spiritual opening: 72,000 energetic channels are activated in both mother and father. (The Tibetan Art of Parenting)
Ancient Greece -- Imagination plays an role in the type of child conceived. Hesiod and Empedocles cite the significance of fantasy to physiognomy. Later, Hippocrates, the physician Soranus, as well as Aristotle and Pliny supported this view.
Torkom Saraydarian -- A woman who has been sexually active with different partners has the thoughtforms and accumulations of those men in her aura. If she conceives a child, that child carries those thoughtforms and accumulations in his aura and has a life of problems. It can even cause the child to be insane. (Sex, Family, Woman in Society)
15th century Europe -- The couple's "imaginings at conception" influence the outcome of the pregnancy. (Aidan Macfarlane, The Psychology of Childbirth)
Sri Ram Foundation -- The parent's consciousness at conception determines the child's consciousness. "The child gets some of the samskaras of the parents." If the couple feels anger or hated, the negative emotions harm the child. If they experience "a higher, loving space, the child will have a more loving nature." (Silence Speaks)
India -- Couples attract beautiful, intelligent children by visualizing each other as god and goddess while making love. The godly qualities become part of the new child.
Egypt -- Conception is an act of God. The husband calls God's name for protection at the time of sexual intercourse and recites passages from the Koran to ensure a healthy, blessed child. (Childbirth in an Egyptian Village by Soheir A. Morsy in Clellan S. Ford's Comparative Study of Human Reproduction)
Ancient China -- When a couple is in harmony, at a sublime moment of peace and lucidity, positive elements will be introduced into the child they conceive. (Sexual Secrets of the Plain Girl)
Judaism -- External influences occurring prior to conception -- especially at the Jewish ritual of the full moon bath effected the shape and mentality of the child. The mother of the high priest Ishmael saw Metatron prior to conceiving him. This accounts for Ishmael's superhuman beauty. He had the face of an angel. And that is why Rabbi Johanan who was renowned for his beauty placed himself at the gate of the women's bath-house, so that the women returning home should look at him. (James Hastings, Encyclopedia of Religion and Ethics, Volume II)
Ethiopia -- An Ethiopian king suspected that his black wife was unfaithful when she birthed a white child. The king expressed his concern to Rabbi Akiba. The Rabbi asked the king , "Do you have any white images in your bedroom?" The king replied, "Yes." The Rabbi explained, "That is why your wife birthed a white child. (James Hastings, Encyclopedia of Religion and Ethics, Volume II)

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of life's longing for itself.
They come through you, but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
Which you cannot visit, not even in your dream.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
--Khahil Gibran
